My Review:

4/5 stars

* I would like to start off by thanking Kosi Harris of KH PR for being so kind to send a copy of Unschool Discoveries: Venturing into the Unknown

I always enjoy reading books that show different perspectives. “Unschool Discoveries: Venturing into the Unknown” is definitely one of those books. It tells the story of a family who moves from the hustle and bustle of New York City, to the sprawling landscape of Texas. I liked that the author/illustrator shifted the color of NYC to dark and gloomy to bits of color and white when the family moved to Texas. The book didn’t delve to heavily into “unschooling” but gave a little snippet into what they learn on the farm. I loved that the parents were involved in their everyday learning, but the children had a lot of ownership in their learning as well, through helping on the family farm to exploring their surroundings. I enjoyed the rhyming in the story making it more fun. This is the first book that I wondered about the font used. In school, we were always taught to capitalize the letter “i” when it stood alone or at the beginning of the sentence. Throughout the book, only the letter “i” or words that had the letter “i” at the beginning of a sentence were never capitalized. I thought this was an interesting little nuance in the story.

The authors also made this book interactive, in that readers can learn MORE ways to explore about unschooling. The authors also include a glossary and some questions to push readers learning.

I think that anyone will enjoy this book because it opens readers eyes to different perspectives and ways of learning.
