“You traded flight for freedom, if you had to, even if it meant losing a part of yourself. Sometimes, in Dorothy’s Oz, you had to get your hands a little bloodied. Okay, maybe a lot bloodied”.
“The clouds stretched out in every direction like an infinite ocean. I dipped my fingers in and let them skim the surface, scooping up little cottony pieces just to watch them melt into nothing in my hand.”
“It all came flooding like a dream you’ve forgotten until something jogs your memory.”
“But I’ve always been pretty bad at shutting up and smiling. Come to think of it, that might have been part of how I’d gotten myself into all this in the first place.”
“You can’t just cover your eyes and pretend like terrible things aren’t happening simply because you can’t see them, even if that is something that would seem like a good idea to a monkey.”
“”Every time I turn around, someone’s telling me to do something different; every time I sit down to think, there’s another mystery that I can’t solve. I just feel stuck.”
“That’s the thing about talking to someone you’re not sure is really listening. Sometimes you end up saying stuff you don’t know you mean until it just comes spilling out.”
“Of course I liked him. I didn’t want to find him because he could help; I wanted to find him because I had a crush on him. There, I said it.”
“… -someplace a little harder to mistake for a nightmare- but on the other hand, the more I settled into this nightmare, the more I began to realize that the insanity of the place was what gave me this feeling of purpose that I’d never had before.”
“Yes I might have been quiet and shy, the kind of person who did my best to keep my head down just to get through the day. But even then, I had never let people walk all over me.”
“I didn’t quite understand what he meant, and then I did. He meant that we had both been through some terrible shit, but that the credits weren’t rolling yet. There was still time for us to write ourselves a happy ending.”
“… She smiled and patted it behind the ears. It was not a unicorn. In fact, it was a huge cat- a panther, maybe? – with a long, sharp horn fastened around its head with a pink ribbon tied in a bow under its chin.”
“… If these items were somehow holding a piece of Dorothy’s essence, it could explain this connection to the Other Place. It might also explain the evil about them…”“Despite what I’d said to Dorothy’s Fantasm in the Fog of Doubt, and as wicked as I knew I could be when I had to, I had one weakness: kindness. And kindness is a weakness. I can see that now. But it’s a weakness I’m still not sure I’d want to give up entirely.”
Goodreads Synopsis:
In this New York Times bestselling sequel to Dorothy Must Die, who is good—and who is actually Wicked? The Wicked Will Rise is perfect for fans of richly reimagined fairy tales and classic tales like Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles and Gregory Maguire’s Wicked.
My name is Amy Gumm—and I’m the other girl from Kansas. After a tornado swept through my trailer park, I ended up in Oz. But it wasn’t like the Oz I knew from books and movies. Dorothy had returned, but she was now a ruthless dictator. Glinda could no longer be called the Good Witch. And the Wicked Witches who were left? They’d joined forces as the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked, and they wanted to recruit me.
My mission? Kill Dorothy. Except my job as assassin didn’t work out as planned. Dorothy is still alive. The Order has vanished. And the home I couldn’t wait to leave behind might be in danger.
Somehow, across a twisted and divided land, I have to find the Order, protect the true ruler of Oz, take Dorothy and her henchmen down—and try to figure out what I’m really doing here.
My Review:
5/5 stars
This book starts off directly where Dorothy Must Die ended when the characters become separated and chaos ensues. I like the shift this book takes where it focuses more on Amy discovering more about who she as a whole and how discovering more about herself will help her in her journey of destroying Glinda and Dorothy. I really liked the pace of this book and how the author spent time on Amy Gumm discovering more about herself versus just jumping in to find and destroy Dorothy. This allows Amy Gumm to be given more depth to her character. I loved seeing how Amy’s confidence changes from the first book to the end of this one. You will also see that even though Amy is becoming confident, it also terrifies her to some degree. To me, I think Amy’s sudden and temporary change in appearance symbolizes how terrified she is of the person she is becoming. I think this was one of my favorite scenes from this book. I was definitely surprised yet satisfied with the ending of this book and look forward to reading the next book “Yellow Brick Road”.
